Alumni Gala Networking Dinner
14 April 2015 - Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
On Tuesday 14 April the University of Sheffield hosted two tables at an Alumni Gala Networking Dinner, organised by the British Council, in Saudi Arabia. The event was hosted at the British Ambassador’s Residence in Riyadh and had been organised to coincide with a number of universities being in the city to participate in the International Exhibition & Conference on Higher Education (IECHE).
The evening started off with a speech from the British Ambassador, Mr. Simon Paul Collis CMG, who talked about the importance of maintaining strong links between the UK and Saudi Arabia. This was then followed by the account of a Saudi Arabian businessman (and UK graduate) who took to the stage to talk about how his experiences in the UK had helped to shape his career.
Approximately 35 universities hosted tables and the event provided a great opportunity for UK Higher Education Institutions to meet their alumni in Saudi Arabia and strengthen professional networks for future endeavours. This was the first formal alumni engagement that the University of Sheffield had attended in Saudi Arabia but as the response from attendees was so positive it is likely to pave the way for further activity in the future.
Members of staff from the International Office attended the event along with faculty members from Engineering and Medicine, Dentistry & Health. They enjoyed hearing about favourite memories of Sheffield (John’s Van featured) and keeping our alumni up to date with the latest developments in Sheffield. Some guests had graduated as recently as 2014 whereas others had graduated in the nineties so for some there was a lot of change to discuss!
