An Evening with the University of Sheffield: Graduation Ceremony and Symposium on Global Challenges
The University of Sheffield was delighted to hold a special graduates' presentation ceremony and University led symposium in Shanghai on Thursday 23 October. There were over 140 graduates, guests and alumni in attendance on the evening. The event took place at the Pudong Shangri-La Hotel in Shanghai.
All graduates from China had the opportunity to attend the special presentation ceremony to celebrate their success with family and friends. Even if students had previously attended a graduation ceremony in Sheffield they were still welcome to attend the Shanghai ceremony. The event was a fantastic opportunity for family and friends of graduates who may have missed the UK ceremonies to join in the graduation celebrations.
There were 43 graduands who were presented with certificates on the evening and were individually congratulated by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Keith Burnett.
Following the congregation of graduation, the Symposium on Global Challenges took place. The symposium saw Professor Paul White, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Professor Tony Ryan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Science, showcase how the University of Sheffield is seeking to tackle key global issues through its research.
Professor Paul White discussed the challenge of an ageing population and what research is currently being undertaken to support a world that keeps on growing. Professor Tony Ryan talked about Project Sunshine. Project Sunshine is a University project that aims to harness the power of the sun to tackle the biggest challenge facing the world today: meeting the increasing food and energy needs of the world’s population in the context of an uncertain climate and global environment change.
The evening concluded with a networking reception which gave guests the opportunity to meet with senior staff from the University as well as network with fellow alumni. Guests enjoyed talking and celebrating on the terrace overlooking the River Bund and impressive Shanghai skyline.
The event was a fantastic success and a key opportunity for the University to further strengthen it’s ties with graduates and friends in China.
