Alumnus to be appointed next head of Armed Forces
Alumnus Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach GBE, KCB, ADC, DL, is to be appointed as the new Chief of the Defence Staff. He will take over from General Sir Nicholas Houghton GCB, CBE, ADC, as the professional head of the Armed Forces this summer.
Sir Stuart graduated from the University with a BA in Geography, Economics and Social History in 1977 and was also awarded an honorary doctorate by the University in 2007. In December he was awarded a GBE (Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire) in the Queen's New Year Honours.
He was commissioned into the Royal Air Force in 1977 and was appointed into his current role as Vice Chief of Defence Staff in May 2013.
Prime Minister David Cameron said:
“For over a decade Sir Stuart has delivered exemplary leadership of the Armed Forces, with an extraordinary record of achievement.
“His experience as Commander Joint Forces and Chief of Joint Operations will be invaluable as we continue to ensure our brave armed forces remain among the most capable and agile in the world.”
Professor Sir Keith Burnett, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, said:
“I am delighted to see that Sir Stuart has been named as the next head of the British Armed Forces and also on his recent award of a GBE in the Queen's New Year Honours.
“From all at the University, I would like to send Sir Stuart our congratulations and wish him the very best as he takes on this key role in the defence of Great Britain.”
