American Alumni Reunion 2017

The Sheffield in America Alumni Reunion 2017Picturesque La Jolla, California was the setting for this year’s American Alumni Reunion, which was held last weekend (20 May 2017).

Around 80 alumni and guests from across the USA gathered at La Valencia hotel to enjoy a drinks reception, dinner and a beautiful Pacific sunset. The guest list included graduates from 7 decades, with graduation years spanning 1953-2016.

Dinner was followed by speeches from two special guests – Professor Dame Pamela Shaw, Vice President and Head of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and Metallurgy alumnus Dr Jeffrey Wadsworth.

Professor Shaw gave an insight into the cutting edge research she is leading at the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), and introduced a new $1.5 million partnership between the University and Battelle Memorial Institute in the USA, that will support science research collaboration with top US universities, such as the Ohio State University.

Dame Pamela then introduced alumnus and CEO of Battelle, Dr Jeffrey Wadsworth who talked about his personal connection to Sheffield, his appreciation of the undergraduate training he received there, and his motivation for wanting to “give back” through the designation of this landmark gift from Battelle.

The reunion event closed with the presentation of a Roll of Benefactors certificate to Dr Wadsworth by the University’s Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shearer West, in recognition of this transformative donation.

We look forward to next year’s American Reunion event on the east coast – likely in May 2018. Please check the Alumni Events web page as details unfold.
