Big Walk nominated for Heist Award

Heist Awards Shortlist

For 25 years the Heist Awards have celebrated truly extraordinary marketing work across the higher education sector, and this year’s winners will be announced on Thursday 7 July 2016 at The Palace Hotel in Manchester.

The Big Walk 2015 saw Sheffield alumni, friends, staff and students help raise a fantastic £86,000 for lung disease research, from over 2,400 individual donations.

Over two weeks the 21-strong Big Walk team walked all 268 miles of the Pennine Way from Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders to Edale in the Peak District. Then to cap off the walk they were joined by 175 staff, students and alumni from the University to walk the 18 miles from Edale to the University.

All of this was in aid of lung disease research at the University, specifically our world-leading research in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). PAH is a devastating condition in which the blood pressure within the lungs is much higher than normal, putting an enormous strain on the heart. There is currently no cure for PAH but at Sheffield we are already making exciting discoveries that we hope will lead to better treatments and ultimately defeat this condition. In May 2016 scientists at the University made a breakthrough, paving the way for new treatments which could benefit patients suffering from the fatal condition.

The Big Walkers Crossing the Big Walk finish line

In 2016 the Big Walk is returning to raise funds for refugee academics and students here at the University. Starting on Sunday 12 June, two teams will walk 120 miles over six days along the Trans Pennine Trail from the east and west coasts, meeting on the edge of Sheffield on 17 June, along with staff and students, to walk the final stretch of the journey back to the University together.

Big Walk project leader David Meadows said:

“I’m delighted that the Big Walk 2015 has been shortlisted for a Heist Award. It’s a reminder of the hard work put in by the walkers, fundraisers and everyone who helped spread the word for this great cause. It’s given us a huge boost as we head towards our 2016 event in June!”
