Celebrating our Alumni Volunteers

To coincide with National Volunteering Week (1-12 June) we wanted to take the opportunity to thank all our alumni who give their time to support the University and our students.

Over the next week we will celebrate University of Sheffield alumni volunteers through sharing stories, quotes, and big stats from the year. Academic departments are able to get involved, and we would love to hear from alumni about why they chose to volunteer. We’ll be sharing as many stories as we can via our Alumni Volunteering Storify.

We’re also very pleased to announce the annual Alumni Volunteers Thank You Event will be hosted by Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Shearer West on Thursday 6 October 2016. Alumni will be able to take in the beautiful views overlooking the city from the Discovery Rooms, whilst enjoying a drinks reception, buffet and speeches with fellow alumni volunteers, staff and students. All alumni who have volunteered their time in the last academic year will be invited to attend, and those that can’t make it to Sheffield will have access to a live stream made possible by student media group Forge TV.

As part of the Thank You Event we will also be presenting the Alumni Volunteer Awards. These awards recognise alumni who have gone above and beyond in their role as volunteers. Staff, students and alumni are able to nominate an alumni volunteer or alumni volunteering project for an award. The Award categories are listed below and nominations are now open. All alumni who are nominated for an award are automatically entered into our new recognition circle, so if you have worked with alumni volunteers who deserve to be recognised, get nominating!

Alumni Volunteering Manager Emma Packham said:

“The annual Thank You Event is a fantastic opportunity for the University to bring alumni, students and staff together and thank those who have given their time to support us. The Awards showcase those that have made an outstanding contribution, and are inspirational to all the alumni, staff and students that attend. It’s a lovely event full of good feeling and pride in the University and our alumni community.”

New for 2016, we are also hosting a special one day conference aimed at alumni who would like to develop their knowledge and skills as volunteers. The Conference will take place on Thursday 6 October and lead into the evening Thank You Event and Awards. It includes a variety of talks, presentations, panels and workshops, providing attendees with the opportunity to hear from University leadership about the progress of the University. Alumni will have the opportunity to learn about key issues for today's students, such as student employability and widening participation, hear more about the campus and history of the University, and develop their skills in mentoring and coaching, presenting for impact, and effective board membership.

Please do make sure to keep an eye on the Sheffield Alumni Facebook and Twitter feeds for profiles on alumni volunteers, the volunteering year in numbers, and comments from many of our alumni volunteers.
