Bella Abrams, Director of Innovation and Technology at Hull College Group, explains why she chose to return to postgraduate study for her part-time MBA at Sheffield in 2009, 10 years after graduating with a BA in History.
Broaden your skills
“I came to live in Sheffield as a student in 1996 and grew to love the place so much I’ve never wanted to leave.
“I chose to study for a post-graduate degree when I was still working for learndirect – an online education company in Sheffield. I’d been working for 10 years and had been very successful in my chosen field but wanted to broaden my range of skills away from IT. I looked at a range of universities in the North and beyond but chose Sheffield as the structure of the course suited me and the delivery of the lectures was easier to fit around my job.”
Gain confidence and promotion
“I gained a great deal from my course. Firstly, I got a good grounding in a lot of skills and disciplines that I had little or no experience in prior to starting the MBA. I spent a great deal of time with a close knit, highly skilled and interesting group of people that I learned an incredible amount from. This, alongside the excellent tuition and support from lecturers meant that I gained a lot of confidence as well as skills and found that I was promoted firstly during the course and again once I had graduated. Longer term, the course gave me the skills and confidence that I need to work at the level that I do now and I find, even five years on, that I use skills, knowledge and models from my course in my everyday working life.”
Help and support
“Studying part-time and working full time was a considerable challenge but using technology as well as a wide range of study and research tools that the University made available meant that going back to study after 10 years was fairly straightforward. I found the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate easy enough but on reflection, that was mainly with the help and support of my tutors. The facilities at the University of Sheffield are fantastic - I could always work at evenings and weekends which made everything a lot easier.
“Why stop here? Maybe I should consider a PhD next...?”
