Good luck to our alumni in Rio!
It’s hard to believe that it’s been four years since Jessica Ennis-Hill (BSc Psychology 2007, Hon LittD 2010) became London 2012’s golden girl with that stunning victory in the Olympic Stadium. But tonight sees the Rio 2016 opening ceremony take place and once again Sheffield will have a strong presence both on and off the field of play. Dan Walker (BA History 1998, MA Journalism Studies 1999) will be presenting live coverage every evening on BBC 4 and many other former Sheffield students will be involved behind the scenes, from performance staff to communications support.
Six Sheffield alumni will be competing in the Rio Olympics and Paralympics, with five representing Team GB and one representing Kosovo. We would like to wish everyone involved the best of luck! Here’s an introduction to Sheffield alumni taking part:
Jessica Ennis-Hill CBE

The golden girl of London 2012, Jessica is hoping to add a second Olympic gold to her collection. Jessica grew up in Sheffield, and trained here all through her studies with long-time coach Toni Minichiello (LLB Law 1996, Hon LittD 2013), to get to where she is now as one of the best athletes in the world. Jessica has also been patron of our Elite Sports Performance Scheme (ESPS) which supports talented athletes through their studies.
