Fundraising quiz raises £1,200 for SITraN

The group who organised the quiz for SITraNWe were recently contacted by fundraiser Gemma Wilson, who was interested in donating funds to SITraN following her friend Gemma Middleton’s diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) earlier this year at the age of only 29.

Since receiving this devastating diagnosis, Gemma’s response has been truly inspirational. In spite of the effects of her illness, she has, along with friends and family, thrown her energies into fundraising to help find a cure for this cruel disease. She has set up a team via Just Giving, “Together we can”, which has already raised over £13,000 for the Motor Neuron Disease Association (MNDA).

Gemma W told us she was organising a quiz and raffle evening to be held in Leeds on 18 October which would raise funds not only for the MNDA but, having heard about the work undertaken at SITraN they also wanted to donate funds raised by their raffle direct to SITraN.

Dave Meadows, Emma Davey and Debbie Beaumont-Thomas, all from the Development, Alumni Relations and Events team, attended the quiz and Emma was able to give a short presentation on the work of the SITraN research teams. The event was a sell-out with over 110 tickets sold and over 40 raffle prizes donated by individuals and businesses all across Yorkshire, including flights to Majorca, spa days and fine dining restaurant vouchers.

All the hard work involved in organising the event more than paid off, with a fantastic total of £1,975 raised so far, of which £1,200 will be donated to SITraN. We have since welcomed Gemma and friends to SITraN for a presentation of this wonderful donation, and are extremely grateful for all their efforts.
