Thank You Sheffield Alumni

Thank You ChallengeEarlier this year we invited student clubs and societies to show their thanks to alumni and friends of the University for the support they provide in the most creative way possible, and to submit their photos into a competition on Facebook.

The response was fantastic with lots of brilliant entries and a great reaction from students about how much they appreciate the support. The four finalists (below) were the dodgeball club, fencing club, Sheffield Marrow and the cycling club. There were 2,127 votes cast for the four finalists with dodgeball receiving the most at 756 votes and winning a £500 Alumni Foundation grant towards their activities.

The Alumni Foundation is a grant-making committee which distributes the philanthropic donations of alumni and friends to the most deserving extra-curricular activities and projects. Grants of up to £2,000 are awarded to clubs and societies to help members develop lifelong skills, connect with the local community or enhance the student experience – all things that help make Sheffield such an innovative and exciting place to study.

The Alumni Foundation aims to award a large number of small grants and applicants are often required to raise part of the funds needed for their project from alternative sources to spread resources as widely as possible.

Thanks to your donations, in the last year there were a record 106 grant applications and a total of 70 grants awarded – also a record – totalling £33,517. A typical example is a £500 grant that was awarded to the tennis club, which was used to purchase new tennis balls and cardio tennis equipment. This allowed the club to offer more sessions and introduce a new cardio tennis programme for newcomers to the sport, which has resulted in an increase in membership.

The tennis club’s Cornelius Clarke said:

“We would like to thank all the donors for everything they have done. Without their help we would not be able to try new and exciting ideas like cardio tennis and the service we provide for our members would not be possible.”
