Top 10 things to do when back in Sheffield

We’re back with another Top 10 list, this time looking at the best things to do when back in Sheffield.

Take a look at the list, and let us know your favourite things to do, as well as anything we’ve missed, over in the comments on our Social Media pages.

Reunite with old friends

Obviously one of the top things to do is to reconnect with those friends who made your time in Sheffield so memorable. Every September we host our annual reunion, helping hundreds of alumni get back together with their mates.

Visit your old student house

It’s great to go back and see what your old student house or halls are like, to see just how much things have changed, and to see what the students of today have to put up with compared to you.

Reconnect with your old sports club

Coming back for Varsity (which starts next week) is the perfect time to see how your favourite sports club has grown, and how well they’re performing these days. Or if you visit the Alumni Sports Day you might even get a game.

Check if your favourite venues still exist

When you do get back in the city it’s definitely worth taking a wander around to see which of your favourite pubs, clubs and other venues have survived, and which are no more (looking at you Gatecrasher).

Explore new campus developments

And while you’re seeing which venues are still around you can also have a look and see how much campus has changed, and what has stayed the same. We’re always striving to add the best new resources for our students and our new buildings are cutting edge.

Volunteer to support current students

Many alumni choose to return to Sheffield to volunteer their time and share their knowledge and career experience with current students. This is incredibly valuable to our students, but can also be a great way of continuing your own personal development.

Revisit your old Department

It can be incredible to see how much your old department has changed, but it can also be wonderful to revisit and see which familiar faces are still around, whether it’s the support staff or your favourite academic.

Show a loved one the city where you studied

While it’s great for you to see what Sheffield is like now, what can be even better is showing a loved one where it was that you spent your years studying, becoming who you are today. Maybe you can even show off your university to the next generation of Sheffield students.

Revisit an old haunt

And when you have shown off where you spent your time studying you can also take a trip back to one of your favourite old haunts, grab some food and a drink, and see if the atmosphere is just how you remembered.

Return to your favourite club night

To round off your visit you can take one final trip down memory lane, going along to your favourite club night at the Students’ Union, see just what it’s like to be surrounded by hundreds of current students, and reflect that “we were never that young”.
