Quizzing and flipping for the Sheffield Scanner
The annual University Quiz Night returned on 19 April, the hottest day of the year to date. We were delighted to welcome 79 teams to the Octagon for an evening of good fun and, of course, challenging questions.
As always, the Quiz Night proved very popular amongst staff, students and alumni and was a sell-out event.
The evening kicked off with time for teams to eat, buy drinks and figure out the Famous Landmarks in the picture round challenge.
Miles Stevenson, Director of Advancement began the proceedings by welcoming guests and outlining the rules and timings for the evening before welcoming returning Quiz Master, Professor Wyn Morgan.
The teams battled it out across two challenging rounds, answering 30 questions in Round 1 and 20 questions in Round 2.
Before the winners of the Quiz were announced, teams played 'Heads & Tails'. Following a few rounds of the game, Professor Morgan and David Meadows flipped the coin and came up tails ten times in a row – something that took Derren Brown 9 hours to achieve and was a 1 in 1024 occurrence!
The first round finished without a winner and the game was replayed for a second time. The lucky winner walked away with an overnight stay for two at Jury’s Inn.
Next, the winners of the Quiz were announced by the Quiz Master. Third and second places were secured by 'Called to the bar' and 'Down T' pit wit' Canary'. The winning team who achieved a final score of 55 was 'House of the Rising Sun'. All 3 teams very generously donated their winnings back to the Sheffield Scanner campaign.
Raffle tickets were also sold during the evening, with all proceeds going towards the Sheffield Scanner. There were 24 lucky winners on the evening who took home some fantastic prizes, kindly donated by a variety of Sheffield and South Yorkshire based companies.
In total the event raised an incredible £2,934.45 for the Sheffield Scanner campaign!
Thank you to everyone who took part and everyone who volunteered their time and services for this event. Finally, a huge thank you to Professor Wyn Morgan who once again was fantastic Quiz Master on the night.
Save the date for the University Quiz Night 2019, taking place on Thursday 2 May.
