University Quiz sets fundraising record for the Sheffield Scanner campaign
Did you know that the average number of baked beans in a standard size tin is 465? Neither did we until the nail-biting end of the most successful ever University Quiz held on Monday 15 May at the Octagon, when this was the tie-breaker question posed to the three teams with equal scores after the three rounds of questions.
The quiz evening raised over £3,000, lending some fantastic support of the Sheffield Scanner campaign.
No fewer than 476 people across 78 teams took part in the annual Quiz, organised by the Events team in the Development, Alumni Relations and Events (DARE) office. Michelle Moore, Deputy Director of Advancement, was the evening’s host and Professor Wyn Morgan, Vice-President for Education, returned for a second year as an excellent quizmaster.
After a hot supper, Michelle welcomed everyone and gave a brief introduction about the Sheffield Scanner. The quiz followed, with participants facing a wide range of questions on general knowledge, sport, TV and Film, Politics, and Food and Drink. While the scoring team was busy working out all the teams’ totals, over 400 people played an elimination game of ‘Heads & Tails’ and the raffle was held, including over 20 prizes kindly donated by local businesses.
Thw tie-breaker question was needed to separate the top three teams, and the final results were:
First place – The Ridiculous 6, led by Richard McGregor Edwards
An absolute highlight of the evening was a show of extraordinary generosity shown by all three of these prize-winning teams, when they all donated their prize money to the Sheffield Scanner campaign, helping to boost the funds raised by the evening to over £3,000, the highest ever total at the University Quiz.
Huge thanks go to everyone involved in such a successful evening: participants, organisers, volunteers and those very generous prize-winners, and we hope to see you all again next year!
