Introducing President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Koen Lamberts
I am incredibly proud to join the University of Sheffield as its President and Vice-Chancellor. During the short time I’ve been here I have met with colleagues, students and alumni and have had the chance to see some of the fantastic work and activities taking place at the University and beyond.
Already I have had the privilege of meeting with a number of Sheffield alumni and I look forward to working with you more over the coming months. Support and donations from alumni and friends have an incredible impact and I would like to thank you for all you do for your university.
You will hopefully have seen the exciting news about the Sheffield Scanner campaign reaching its £2 million fundraising target. I recently visited the site where the new MRI-PET facility will be built and I look forward to the next steps in this exciting journey and to seeing how the new facility will advance Sheffield’s ambitions for excellence in medical and clinical research. Thank you for helping to make this happen.
Collegial working is very important to me and the Sheffield Scanner campaign is an excellent example of this. By working together, we can ensure that we benefit collectively from the many opportunities that lie ahead and develop better solutions to the challenges we face.
The employability programme City Connections, which provides students with an opportunity to engage with alumni and the organisations they work for to develop their professional skills and knowledge of how businesses operate, is another great example of your vital contribution.
I am passionately committed to supporting our students. Students really are at the heart of this university and we are very lucky to have the best students' union in the country. I was proud to stand together with Students’ Union President Lillian Jones at a recent event to reaffirm our partnership and our commitment to working together.
At its heart Sheffield is a civic university for the 21st century and I am looking forward to working with partners in the Sheffield City Region. In November I attended the opening of the new McLaren facility next to our AMRC. This new centre is a cause for celebration for our region, the North of England and the UK as a whole. I’ve also attended the Sheffield Make A Difference Awards which celebrate how much the voluntary and community sector contributes to the life of our city.
One of the many reasons I am so passionate about Sheffield is how our strongly held values help guide and inspire everything we do. This has come across so strongly in everything I’ve seen so far and I am committed to building on this important work.
I feel proud and privileged to be here and, with your support, look forward to building on Sheffield's achievements and helping secure our future as a genuinely world-leading university.
Very best wishes,
Professor Koen Lamberts
President and Vice-Chancellor
