The Development and Alumni Relations Office welcomed local Sheffield alumni to a drinks reception at the Western Bank ‘Circus Showmen: Innovators Who Shaped the Circus’ Exhibition on Thursday 22 March. This was the seventh alumni event at the Exhibition Space and proved to be very popular.

The exhibition was curated by Professor Vanessa Toulmin and Amanda Bernstein from the University’s National Fairground Archive. It takes visitors back in time to the late eighteenth century when circus content and performance was first developed as an awe-inspiring art form. Personalities who defined circus for their generation come back to life in an intriguing collection of ephemera, costumes and props, covering 250 years of circus history.

Alumni enjoyed a tour of the exhibition and a talk from Charlie Cairoli Junior, whose father the clown Charlie Carioli, was featured in much of the exhibition. The event provided an excellent opportunity to meet and mix with fellow alumni living in the Sheffield area.
