Sheffield Sports Teams Travel in Style Thanks to Donations
The University of Sheffield is proud to announce the launch of the Sport Sheffield minibus for clubs and societies, which was funded through generous donations from supporters of the University’s Alumni Fund.
Sport Sheffield, the University of Sheffield’s sports facilities and activities department, has 3,500 students involved in clubs, and large numbers of students travelling around the country every week representing the institution in their respected sport. It is committed to creating a customer centric approach to running the sport facilities and services, and is backed up by the University’s vision for student growth and development via sport.
However, the transport situation at the University has become more desperate in recent years, as due to funding restrictions, the company used are not able to allow clubs and societies to use their buses. This has had a massive detrimental effect on clubs competing both locally and nationally.
Thanks to a £20,000 grant awarded by the Alumni Foundation, Sport Sheffield was able to purchase a minibus and eliminate these transport problems. This grant was funded through generous donations to the Alumni Fund, which was established in 2003 to ensure that students have access to a first-class education regardless of their financial background, whilst maintaining and improving facilities at the University for current and future generations. The Fund has since raised over £2 million thanks to the support of alumni, staff, parents, students and friends of the University – 100% of which goes directly towards helping talented students fulfil their potential.
Sport undoubtedly works to enhance the student experience, and the minibus will be a crucial factor to enable students to take the opportunities available to them. Thanks to the vital support of Alumni Fund donors, the mini bus will help to ensure that sport can continue to fly the flag positively and successfully for the University of Sheffield in each of its respected areas, whilst boosting student involvement and attendance at clubs and societies.
When not in use by University sports teams, the Sheffield Sport minibus will also have a huge community impact, mirroring the existing commitment of Sport Sheffield through volunteering projects, community events and programmes, sports days and community sports teams.
The bus will be maintained and leased by Sheffield Community Transport on behalf of the University, to a number of registered groups within the local community. These groups include the elderly, disabled and disadvantaged, all of whom are unable to access mainstream transport, and who will all benefit from its use and assistance with day outings, regular transport and shopping trips.
Many thanks to everybody who has contributed to the success of the University of Sheffield Alumni Fund. For more information on the Fund and how you can donate, please visit www.shef.ac.uk/alumni/support
