U Sport is transformed into Sport Sheffield

With the Olympics and Paralympics coming London later this year, the spotlight is on sport throughout the country. Over the last 12 months, the spotlight has also been on Sport within the University of Sheffield and how it is being delivered to ensure that our students are getting the very best experience.

The former U Sport team with officers in the Students´ Union and senior management of the University have developed a new strategy for Sport within the University called “Sport Sheffield”. This is based on a `sport continuum´ and takes the idea of participating in sport beyond just doing the activity, to providing opportunities to develop personal skills, using sport to build communities, maintain health and wellbeing, creating a social network for life, and pursue excellence in Sport.

In addition to this Sport Sheffield has completed a total refurbishment of the S10health gym and resurfaced all of the football pitches. The University is the first in the country to install such an extensive range of state-of-the-art playing surfaces at its Goodwin Sports Centre, catering for a variety of sports including hockey and football.

The synthetic Desso Sports Systems are FIFA´s preferred producer for artificial turf pitches and the product is used by top football clubs including Real Madrid, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.
A new training area designed to meet Rugby Football Union standards also provides additional bespoke facilities for University performance clubs. The rugby pitch was made possible by the vision and generosity of the late John Hawley, a respected and popular member of University staff who sadly passed away in September 2008.

Sport Sheffield is committed to delivering an excellent sporting student experience, through providing students with a wide range of opportunities to get involved in sport, celebrating sporting achievements and making friends for life. Across the University there is a shared commitment by all to use the overarching umbrella brand of Sport Sheffield.

Sport Sheffield facilities are open to all alumni and members of the public. To find out more information please visit the website at http://www.sport-sheffield.com/
