Alumni Foundation helps Rowing Club celebrate new women’s eight

Rowing Club members at Dam Flask Reservoir for naming ceremony

Sheffield University Rowing Club (SURC) welcomed the addition of a new women’s eight boat, in a special naming ceremony on Saturday 24 March.

The boat, purchased second-hand from Manchester University Rowing Club with donations from Sheffield Alumni, went through a process of minor repair work and was given a good clean-up, before being renamed as ‘Salacia’, in the ceremony which took place at Dam Flask Boat House. The name ‘Salacia’ originates from Roman mythology, representing the name of the female divinity of the sea.

The boat was bought to replace the oldest boat that SURC have and which was in a bad state of repair after many years of use. The £2000 grant, donated via the University’s Alumni Foundation, was highly appreciated by club members. Rebecca Peck, SURC Publicity and Alumni Relations Officer, said “The club was both excited and extremely thankful to receive the annual grant from the Alumni Foundation. We were desperately in need of a new women’s eight seeing as our current one is the oldest boat that the club has and is in poor condition. The new boat will enable us to introduce more female students to rowing and invite more people to train with us. We are extremely thankful to all alumni who donate back to the University to help student clubs and societies through the Alumni Foundation”.

The club hopes that with the addition of new boat, they can not only encourage more people to take up rowing and support those who are already actively involved in the sport, but also add to their growing list of successes. October 2011 saw the club compete at Dee Autumn Head in Chester, Lincoln Beginners Head and York Small Boats Head. The new semester also saw the club compete in the annual inter-university competition BUCS where they successfully gained BUCS points.
