More than 450 staff, students and alumni from both The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam took part in the inaugural Sheffield Varsity 10k at Don Valley Stadium on Sunday 25 March. The event was organised by Alison Muir, alumna and Alumni Relations Manager at the University Sheffield and Alice Fairhall, Sheffield Hallam alumna who runs her own company, Fairplay Sports Management.

It was the first time the city´s two universities have gone head to head in a 10k run and it was one of more than 40 different events taking place over the eight days of Varsity 2012. Despite Sheffield University winning both the female and male classes, Hallam won the overall competition with an average time of 18 seconds faster than Sheffield University.

All proceeds from the event went to St Luke’s Hospice a Sheffield charity, which provides help and support for individuals with incurable illnesses. To find out more about St Luke’s please visit: www.stlukeshospice.org.uk
