Sheffield Alumni in Japan Celebrate the London 2012 Olympics

Sheffield Alumni in Yokohama City, Japan gathered on Saturday 4 August to celebrate the London 2012 Olympics and to support fellow Sheffield alumna Jessica Ennis. Below is the event write up from alumna Mari Tamura Yamamoto (2005, MA Research Methods in Politics and International Relations). The Development and Alumni Relations Office would like to thank Mari for hosting this event in Yokohama City.

We started the party by toasting, “Here’s to Jessica’s success! Cheers!” Nine Sheffield alumni gathered at the oldest English pub in Yokohama on the Saturday 4 August to celebrate the London 2012 Olympics and to support Jessica Ennis. We were all new to each other, but it soon turned into a friendly atmosphere, with friendly chatter because we had a common background, Sheffield. We enjoyed sharing memories about our student days in Sheffield; the Arts Tower, Bar One, Broomhill, West Street, Chatsworth, the Yorkshire accent and so on. We were reminded of the nice friends and staff at the University as well as of the peaceful city of Sheffield. It was also nice to hear how much we have developed in our own careers after graduation. There have been few opportunities to meet Sheffield alumni in Japan and we all wished we could have more events like this in future. It was a great night, and it was a pleasure and great honor to know Jessica had won a gold medal the next morning.
