Achieve More: The State of Sheffield

The State of Sheffield is a four-day interdisciplinary module which gives students the opportunity to:

  • Engage with academics and their research;
  • Tackle some of the biggest global challenges facing society today;
  • Work across disciplines to broaden horizons and subject knowledge;
  • Develop team-working and problem-solving skills.

The module offers an extraordinary opportunity for all 1700 first year Social Sciences students to come together and explore what it means to be a social scientist.

As part of the module, students work in groups to investigate a global issue that is currently challenging the City of Sheffield and to create an artefact that communicates their findings to a wider audience.

The module’s local setting demonstrates the ‘real-world’ nature of social sciences research and places it in the context of international themes. It enables students to get to know Sheffield and its people in a very different way.

This year's themes:

  • Environment
  • Changing Places, Changing Times
  • Impact
  • Citizenship
  • Diversity and Division

See 'Project Examples' (on the right of the screen) for examples of the projects which sit under each of the themes.
