City Connections provided forty students from backgrounds that are under-represented in higher education with the opportunity to develop skills, build confidence and gain insights into different business sectors and organisations. As well as taking part in practical workshops in innovation, application skills, business structures and case study exercises, they attended an evening networking event hosted by accountancy group KPMG. Here the students were joined by alumni who had generously given their time to share their career experiences.
Students benefitted from visits to four very different businesses, whose involvement had been volunteered by alumni who hold senior positions with each one. Many more alumni offered their time to attend the evening networking event.
Students gained an insight into a very wide range of career sectors and heard first-hand from alumni how they have gotten to where they are today.
100% of students felt motivated to do well academically and to take advantage of extra-curricular activities
100% of students enjoyed the event and would recommend it to others
“The event has made me a lot more reflective and inquisitive, and opened my eyes to the opportunities which are there for the taking after graduation.”
“Networking with Sheffield alumni and hearing their stories gave me real inspiration and confidence.”
