Discover STEM speaker event

11 December 2014

Discover STEM is a two-year programme for sixth formers who are studying science and/or maths. The students get a feel for what university is really like from current undergradaute students, and discover more about why they might want to study for a STEM degree.

Alumni Involvement

6 alumni gave talks about their experience of studying a STEM subject at degree level and their personal journey from sixth form to where they are now. Students then had the opportunity to chat with the alumni and receive more specific advice.

37 prospective university students from backgrounds underrepresented in higher education learned more about why university and, specifically, a STEM degree, could be a good career choice for them.

“I've never taken part in any alumni activities before the STEM event, but after seeing the email come through, I felt like it would be an extremely rewarding experience and that's exactly what it was. It gave me the opportunity to give something back to the University that had given me so much and the Sheffield Community at large.”
