Abigail CollardDegree: BSc Biology with Employment Experience

Abigail joined the University of Sheffield's Degree with Employment Experience programme and did a year-long work placement between her second and third year. She worked for Mondelēz International, the company behind major brands such as Cadbury. Her role was to develop new chocolate products and improve existing products for the seasonal market in Europe.

She first made contact with Mondelēz at one of the careers fairs put on by the University of Sheffield Careers Service. After securing the placement, Abigail made such a good impression that she was offered a job in Chocolate Research, Development and Quality at Mondelēz , to start after she graduates.

Placements for Sheffield students

"For my placement I was developing new chocolate products and improving products currently in Mondelēz’s portfolio, for the gifting and seasonal market within Europe. It provided me with a great opportunity to use the scientific knowledge and skills I've gained throughout my degree course in a really different and creative way, and it’s been extremely rewarding seeing the products I created being sold in shops since leaving.

"I chose to do a placement year to both help me decide on a future career path, and to gain vital experience in the workplace, which would be extremely beneficial regardless of whether I chose to continue down this career path or not. My experience has resulted in me accepting a graduate job offer to work within Chocolate Research, Development & Quality at Mondelēz starting in July. This would not have been possible without the great careers fairs which are put on by the University’s Careers Service, as this is an industry I had never previously considered and an opportunity I would not have found without them.

"The transferable skills I gained through involvement in societies, and in particular the departmental public outreach programme, played a massive part in me being offered the placement opportunity, and then allowed me to showcase my skillset throughout the year, ultimately leading to my job offer. Sheffield offers so many opportunities to gain these skills whilst doing something you enjoy, and the staff at the university are always keen to help support you in any way possible."
