Culture and values

Our culture and values

At the heart of all the inspiring teaching and outstanding research taking place in Animal and Plant Sciences, are the people who make it happen. They inform the culture and values of our department. You can find out abut the ways in which we support one another here.

Nurturing talent

When a new member joins the Animal and Plant Sciences team, we do everything we can to help them settle in, and that safety net never goes away. There are a number of departmental resources and University-wide initiatives in place to support induction, networking and career development.

Equality and diversity

We are committed to supporting equality and promoting diversity across our department. We have been awarded an Athena SWAN Silver Award for our efforts in this area, and each year we hold lectures in honour of one of our most inspiring female alumni - Margaret Savigear.

Supporting students

The students on our courses get support throughout their degrees from our dedicated staff. The students also take the lead - organising events and activities through their student societies - and make opportunities to speak out about what's important to them.

Graduate stories

For many of the students who've come through our department, the cultures and values of APS remain a part of who they are. We asked some of our graduates to reflect on their experiences of studying with us here at the University of Sheffield.

Postgraduate stories

Our former PhD students have gone on to successes in a diversity of careers. We asked some of them to reflect on their time studying for a PhD in the department, and how it helped them in their chosen careers.
