Set up a media assignment

You can set up assignments in Blackboard that allow students to submit media content to be assessed.

Assessment submission areas should be made easily accessible to students. You may wish to keep the assessments all together in one place, or situate them in content areas that relate to specific course activities.


Create a media assignment in Blackboard

  1. Log into MUSE and open Blackboard.




  2. Open the relevant course and navigate to the content area that relates to assessment.




  3. Ensure that Edit Mode is on.




  4. Click Assessments and select Assignment.




  5. Give the assignment a meaningful name, and enter the required assessment details including Due Date, Points Possible and Availability. Students should also have access to the assignment brief and marking criteria.

  1. Click Submit to save the assignment.

How do students submit a media assignment in Blackboard?

  1. Log into MUSE and open Blackboard.




  2. Navigate to the relevant Blackboard course and find the assignment to submit to.




  3. Click the assignment title to open the submission page.




  4. In the Assignment Submission section click Write Submission.




  5. In the Content Editor click the Add Content button (+ icon) and select Kaltura Media. If the Add Content button is not visible, click the three dots icon in the top right corner of the Content Editor to reveal full options.




  6. A pop-up window will open. Click Embed next the media you wish to submit, or click + Add New to upload a new media file. 

Tip: Video file sizes can be large, so for best results upload media via a university computer, Eduroam or a wired network connection.

  1. The media file will appear in the Blackboard Content Editor, and can be reviewed at this point.




  2. If necessary, add any attachments using the Attach Files menu (do not add extra text into the Content Editor textbox).




  3. Click Submit to complete media assignment submission. Media can be reviewed after submission. An assignment submission receipt will be sent to student's email address.

Grade a media assignment

  1. Log into MUSE and open Blackboard.




  2. Open the relevant course, click Grade Centre on the left hand course menu, and select Needs Marking.




  3. In the User Attempt column, click the name of the student you wish to grade.

  1. Click Play on the media item to view the assignment submission. You must be working online to view the media.




  2. Provide feedback in the Feedback to Learner textbox and enter a grade in the Attempt field.




  3. Click Submit to save.

Providing audio/video feedback

  1. Log into MUSE and open Blackboard.




  2. Open the relevant course, click Grade Centre on the left hand course menu, and select Needs Marking.




  3. In the User Attempt column, click the name of the student you wish to grade.




  4. In the Feedback to Learner textbox, click the A button to open the full Content Editor.




  5. In the Content Editor click the Add Content button (+ icon) and select Kaltura Media. If you cannot see the Add Content button, click the three dots icon in the top right corner of the Content Editor to reveal full options.




  6. A pop-up window will open. Click Add New and select Kaltura Capture to record audio or video feedback.

  1. After recording your feedback in Kaltura Capture and uploading it to your My Media library, click Embed to add it to Feedback to Learner notes.




  2. Click Submit to save.
