Batch create / enrol students in groups

If you want to create a large amount of groups, there is a quick way of doing this involving excel and MOLE. If you are in the process of setting up a course for an upcoming semester e.g. a new course or rolled over course, we recommend deleting any existing groups that may have rolled over and undertaking both parts of this process.

If you have not already set up your groups, start here, and then progress to enrolling students. If you already have your groups, proceed to the enrollment section further down the page.

  1. Download this file to give you a template to work from
  2. Follow the instructions in the excel sheet (for ease later, we usually recommend the group code and group name are the same)
  3. Export as a .CSV File
  4. Go to Users and Groups > Groups in Course Management
  5. Click Import
  6. Import Groups
  7. Browse for the file you created
  8. Submit
  9. You will then get an email when this has been done.

To Add students to groups

You can use this option if your groups have already been created manually, or by the process above

  1. Download this file to give you a template to work from
  2. Replace the group code column with your group codes.
To access the group codes go to Users and Groups > Groups, in the course management panel.
    Groups menu management panel
Then select view options > Show group code
    View options Groups
This will then show the group codes in the furthest right column
    Group codes reveal

If these group codes do not appear, this is due to a known issue when creating group sets. To make the group codes appear, export the relevant groups (using the group only option). After completing the process repeat the step and the codes will now appear.

3. Replace the username field with the students usernames
4. Export as a .CSV File
5. Go to Users and Groups > Groups in Course Management
6. Click Import
7. Import Group Members
8. Browse for the file you created
9. Submit
You will then get an email when this has been done.
