Undergraduate fieldwork bursaries 2016 - Tracy Platts at the Forum Sempronii, Fossombrone, Le Marche, Italy

At the Department of Archaeology we offer our undergraduate students fieldwork bursaries to help fund their participation in archaeological fieldwork or work experience within the heritage sector. These present fantastic opportunities for our students to develop their skills and to enhance their CV. Successful applicants report back to the department about their experience. Here, BA Archaeology graduate and current MSc Osteoarchaeology student Tracy Platts writes about her experience excavating on the Forum Sempronii project in Italy.

I took part in excavations at Forum Sempronii, close to the present day town of Fossombrone and run by the University of Urbino, for the second time this summer. The site is a Roman settlement, founded in the 3rd century BC, on Via Flaminia, the main route between Rome and what is now Rimini. Excavations this year concentrated on the areas of Domus Europa, a large Roman villa, and an area of shops adjacent to an extant section of Via Flaminia.

The field work bursary went a long way towards paying for my travelling expenses to Italy, enabling me to take part in this enriching experience.

Along with uncovering important and informative structural elements of the domus, we excavated numerous artefacts, including a bone finial, and a large amount of animal bone in the shop area. We also found a later (6th century AD) tomb in this area, with human remains.

Gaining hands on experience at an excavation such as this is an invaluable addition to University study, helping to put the subjects we learn about into context, and adding much to our understanding of the subject, along with the fantastic opportunity to meet and work alongside a group of international students and archaeologists.
