Sanja trained as an archaeologist in Australia and Europe. She obtained a BA (Hons) in Classical Archaeology from the University of Sydney (Australia), an MA in Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies from Deakin University (Australia), an MA in Research Methods for Archaeology from the Institute of Archaeology UCL, and a PhD in Archaeology from the Institute of Archaeology UCL. Her research approaches the Roman world from a global perspective and she specialises in the archaeology of sexuality and gender in the Roman Empire, Roman visual culture (with a particular focus on the provinces), and the dynamics of social and material changes in the Aegean during the Roman Empire. She is also interested in consumption approaches to visual and material culture and social theory in archaeology, particularly focusing on Feminist, New Materialist, and Queer epistemologies. Her most recent articles were published in the Journal of Roman Archaeology and the Journal of Social Archaeology.
Between 2018 and 2022 Sanja conducted her research in Greece where she was associated with the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens. She has worked on excavation and pedestrian survey projects in Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Serbia, the UK, and Australia.
Sanja joined the Department of Archaeology at the University of Sheffield in 2022.
