Biography

I completed my studies on Late Antiquity and Medieval Archaeology at the University of Siena (IT), where I obtained my First Class Degree and Ph.D.

I was then employed as Research Associate at the University of Nottingham (UK) and at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology of Philadelphia (USA), where now I serve as a Consulting Scholar. I also worked as Consultant Archaeologist for the Butrint Foundation.

I was member of the inter-universitary programme “Edilizia in materiale deperibile nell’altomedioevo italiano”, together with the Universities of Siena and Ca’Foscari of Venice.

I have been involved in major excavations in Tuscany (Castel di Pietra, Grosseto, Selvena, Poggibonsi, Miranduolo, Staggia) and in Albania (Butrint). I have been directing excavations in Siena (Ospedale Santa Maria della Scala) and Butrint (Well of Junia Rufina).

I have been working for the Soprintendenza ai Beni Archeologici della Toscana for several rescue excavations in the territory of Grosseto.

Current research projects/collaborations

Currently, I am a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellow in the study of settlement trends in the area of Alberese (South Tuscany, IT) during the Roman and Late Antique period.

I am directing major excavations in South Tuscany (Alberese) at the Roman temple area at Scoglietto, a sanctuary dedicated to Diana Umbronensis, and at the river port of the Etruscan-Roman colony of Rusellae.

Major collaborations involve or had involved the John Cabot University at Rome, the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, the American Academy at Rome, the Butrint Foundation, the University of East Anglia.
