Archaeobotanical species to be investigated
400 species were chosen by reference to existing and emerging datasets of archaeological weed species to which we have access published archaeobotanical reports and information provided by practising archaeobotanists for their current archaeological projects. Several collaborators supplied quantified species lists for sites throughout the study area. Species will be selected on the basis of their frequency of occurrence in archaeobotanical assemblages from different sites, regions and time periods rather than their abundance in individual archaeological samples so that low abundance `indicator´ species, which provide useful ecological information, are included but priority is given to regularly occurring species which can provide statistically meaningful results.
