I am passionate about teaching and research on the practical aspect of Architecture, Sustainability, Energy, and Thermal Comfort. I encourage innovative solutions to enhance the relationship between the architectural design, environment and the end-user.

After practicing Architecture for four-years, I expanded my teaching and research experiences to the University of Edinburgh, Leeds, Derby, and Sheffield. I graduated my PhD in Architecture from Edinburgh University, where I received the Edinburgh-Award twice. I enjoyed a Research-Fellowship in the University of Leeds collaborating with interdisciplinary researchers. As the Programme Leader in Architectural Technology in the University of Derby, I received the Vice-Chancellor Researcher-Award.

Teaching Activities

My teaching is mainly in the Post Graduate Taught level with a focus on Sustainable Architecture and Post Occupancy Evaluation.

I enjoy teaching, started it in 2006 and value a one-to-one teaching relationship with my students. Enhancing student learning is my passion through the application of new approaches, including constructivism in architecture (learning through personal experience and building), technology enhanced learning and research-led approaches. I believe in learning through enjoying a hands-on activity, critical thinking processes, challenging the existing practices, and developing innovative solutions. I encourage a high standard architectural design based on sustainable criteria (e.g. balancing energy and comfort), aesthetics, and occupant views and behaviour. The greatest reward for me is to celebrate the success of my students in their design, research and professional careers.

Research Interests

I am passionate about my research, which aims to balance energy and comfort. My research interests include Personal Comfort Systems (PCS), Thermal Comfort, Environmental Control, User Behaviour, Energy Efficiency, Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE), and Healthy Buildings.

There is a great value in challenging the current methods, standards and practices in thermal comfort research through an innovative approach and a different point of view. I introduced a qualitative approach of Visual Thermal Landscaping (VTL) to research thermal comfort in context. My research activities include National, International and Interdisciplinary collaborations; chairing conference sessions and workshops; journal editor; conference organiser; and the reviewer of a wide range of journals, conferences and funding projects.
