The Bakhtin Centre Research Collection

The Centre holds a specialist collection of materials in several languages, but it is especially rich in Russian language materials. We hold the largest collection of Russian language books related to the work of the Bakhtin Circle in the UK and most probably outside of the largest Russian libraries. These include rare works published in very small print runs and some of the earliest responses to the works of the Circle. We also hold almost all the primary texts by members of the Circle, including some rare first editions. These are the results of many visits to Russia and donations by authors themselves. In addition to the Russian language editions, we hold most of the translations of the works of the Circle, including rarities such as the Azerbaijani translation of Bakhtin´s Dostoevskii book. Our collection of secondary material in English and other major European languages is also extensive.

In addition to these materials, the Centre holds an extensive collection of Russian language work dealing with social and cultural theory, literary scholarship, linguistic theory and more general intellectual history. The collection is especially rich in works dealing with the early Soviet period and we hold a considerable number of rare works dating from that time. These include publications of Soviet research institutes, monographs, journals and edited collections. In some cases we hold the only copies that are available in the UK.

The secondary material we hold on these areas is also extensive, and includes many items that are difficult to obtain outside major Russian libraries.

The items held in the collection are catalogued with the University of Sheffield Library collection (follow the link below). Books may not be borrowed, but may be consulted on site with the permission of the Centre´s director.
