The Fly Facility has also been involved in training apprentice technicians Aaron Kirkby (pictured left) and Scott Weston. These apprentices were mentored and given the skills required to carry out fly work for a period of 8 months, before training in other areas of the Faculty of Science.

This formed part of their Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities (QCF) which they have now passed.  Both Aaron and Scott are now employed as technicians in The Faculty of Science.

Congratulations to Kath Whitley who won first prize for her poster at the annual IST (Institute of Science and Technology) Technical Conference.

The conference was held in Leicester in September 2017 and included talks and workshops offering delegates an opportunity to update their technical knowledge, skills and further their career development.

The IST Award for ‘Best Poster Presentation’ recognised the most outstanding poster presented during the Conference. The award category was open to individuals operating within a technical and/or professional community within the last 12 months and in attendance at the Conference.

The posters were judged on their clarity of submitted material, novelty and visual impact.

Kath was awarded a years IST membership and an iPad mini for her poster ‘Drosophila facility at The University of Sheffield’. Well done Kath!
