The Bateson is multidisciplinary research Centre combining expertise in cell and developmental biology, stem cell biology, mechanobiology, imaging and mathematical modelling together with translational biomedicine. Our base is founded on Sheffield’s world-leading expertise in in vivo imaging and genetic dissection of molecular pathways, using model systems including cells, fruitfly, zebrafish, chick, mouse and incorporating in vivo imaging studies in man.
Work in the Centre is divided into four main research themes.
The process by which a single fertilised egg gives rise to the exquisitely structured and perfectly functioning organs and tissues of the body. Specifically this theme studies how myriad simple interactions between molecules, cells and tissues in space and time give rise to complex patterns and structures.
Over the lifecourse, damaged cells are continually replaced with new cells arising from stem cell populations. This theme studies how stem cell functions are regulated over life and how cell proliferation is controlled.
Focuses on understanding how the processes necessary for normal neurological development and homeostasis can contribute to, or reveal new therapies for, neurodegenerative diseases.
Studies how the body protects itself against environmental challenges particularly tissue injury and infection, how this protection is necessary for repair of tissues following injury and how defective inflammatory responses lead to defective repair.
