Degree: MSc Human Anatomy with Education
Graduate role: Anatomy Demonstrator, University of Liverpool
Stephanie returned to Sheffield to study the MSc Human Anatomy with Education programme having worked in lab and pharmacy roles within the NHS since 2012. The combination of anatomical study offered by the course, and the opportunity to gain a professional teaching qualification has helped Stephanie to progress down her chosen career path as an Anatomy Demonstrator.

"My passion for human anatomy developed whilst completing my undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science at the University of Sheffield. I relished in learning about the human body through cadaveric dissection, whilst applying this to my developing knowledge at a molecular and cellular level.

"Since graduating in 2012, I have worked in a number of different roles including laboratory and pharmacy work within the NHS. However, it was my first job as an Anatomy Demonstrator at the University that I enjoyed the most. I have always been keen to return to this path with a desire to lead and engage others in their learning. Thankfully the MSc in Human Anatomy with Education was introduced and I leapt at the opportunity to apply.

It is such a privilege to be given the opportunity for cadaveric dissection, and I particularly enjoyed being able to study around a cadaver in small groups of only 4 or 5 students. This enabled me to develop an in-depth understanding of anatomy and strengthen my dissection skills. It also supported the development of my peer relationships.

MSc Human Anatomy with Education

"It is such a privilege to be given the opportunity for cadaveric dissection, and I particularly enjoyed being able to study around a cadaver in small groups of only 4 or 5 students. This enabled me to develop an in-depth understanding of anatomy and strengthen my dissection skills. It also supported the development of my peer relationships. Initially I was apprehensive about being older than the majority of the cohort and having had a break from education. However, we all had varying backgrounds and different strengths, and the cohort really encouraged one another throughout the MSc journey.

"Developing supportive peer relationships is important to me not only as a student, but also as an aspiring teacher. I therefore chose to focus my dissertation on peer relationships and the impact they have on academic student engagement. It was great to be able to conduct a piece of independent research that was of interest to me, and I hope to use my findings to shape my future teaching practice.

"The MSc has been expertly designed to support the development of my pedagogical knowledge and skills. In addition to teaching small groups of undergraduate Biomedical Science students on a weekly basis, I also had the opportunity to act as an online mentor for the Forensic Facial Reconstruction course, and enjoyed working at the University’s Discovery Night with a group of peers, where we introduced human anatomy to school children. There are a range of opportunities provided by the Department and University that I encourage future students to take advantage of.

"This experience, alongside two education modules, has contributed to me receiving recognition as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. This is a highly sought-after accolade and has been a unique selling point in helping me to secure a post as an Anatomy Demonstrator at the University of Liverpool. The MSc has therefore been invaluable in helping me to progress in my chosen career path."
