Accessing state-of-the-art microscopy facilities
While it sounds like a cliché, I was (and still am) that child that never stops asking ‘why?’ so following a career in research always appealed to me. Following my degree, I joined Simon Foster’s lab within the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology for my PhD, and I am now continuing this work as a postdoctoral researcher.
I am interested in the processes behind how bacteria build their protective cell wall. In my work, I use several different techniques, but what particularly interests me is the use of high-resolution microscopy.
My third-year project was used as part of a publication and gave me a real taste of what research can be like.
Victoria Lund
BSc Biochemistry and Microbiology
One of my reasons for staying in Sheffield is its recent investment in imaging through the Imagine: Imaging Life program, which gives me access to some of the very best microscopes.
What attracted me to Sheffield in the first place was its focus on research, and how as an undergraduate it is possible to contribute to this. My third-year project was used as part of a publication and gave me a real taste of what research can be like.
My future plans currently are to stay in academic research where I can not only carry on with my research but also inspire future generations of scientists.
