Omar ShabirDegree: BSc Biomedical Science

Graduate role: PhD student, The University of Sheffield

"I am a PhD student at the University of Sheffield's interdisciplinary Neuroimaging in Cardiovascular Disease network, which includes the departments of Neuroscience, Psychology and Cardiovascular Science.

"I did my undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science here at the University of Sheffield. The degree provided me with the in-depth understanding and knowledge relating to neuroscience and medicine in general, as well as key neurodegenerative diseases that I'm interested in. The degree was well structured with key emphasis on neuroscience modules throughout the three years, in particular allowing me to chose a neuroscience route in third year.

"Upon graduating from Biomedical Science, I did a year-long MSc in Translational Neuroscience at Sheffield, which further enhanced my knowledge and understanding of the field, as well as providing me with much needed experience in the laboratory working on motor neuron disease research – contributing to a publication with a collaboration in Cardiff University.

"Sheffield is a wonderful vibrant student city which appealed to me from the very first time I came to visit, and after my undergraduate degree, I wanted to stay in Sheffield to go onto postgraduate study. The University ranks amongst the best in the UK for medical research, combined with excellent teaching, facilities and ethos. I was more than happy to continue in Sheffield."
