Water projects

Our culture of developing partnerships with industry, and efficient and integrated funding bid processes, makes doing business with us easy.

On

Working with industry and a variety of UK and EU funding sources we have levered over £15m for water-related research since 2000.

Here are a few examples of our current and recent water research projects to show the scope of our fundamental science and translational research with both industry and agency partners. Visit individual research group pages to find more examples.

PODDS (Prediction of Discolouration in Distribution Systems)

Our on-going projects our investigating discolouration within water distribution systems.

With increasingly stringent regulations governing discolouration, our leading international research is essential to maintain water quality compliance whilst also allowing for pro-active management, justifiable capital/operational cost planning and optimal service provision.

URSULA

Urban River Corridors And Sustainable Living Agendas. Now completed, this project tackled river corridor issues holistically by treating the river and its urban setting as a system. Throughout the project, innovative solutions, tools and knowledge was developed to help guide the regeneration of urban river corridors worldwide.

Cloud to Coast

Research to develop a new integrated model to predict the exposure to and the health impact assessment of pathogen risks, as indexed by Faecal Indicator Organisms (FIOs), in near-shore coastal waters.

QUICS

Quantifying Uncertainty in Integrated Catchment Studies. The overall aim of QUICS is to provide high levels of training and carry out research in order to take the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) to the next level and improve water quality management by assessing the uncertainty of integrated catchment model water quality predictions.

Pipe Dreams

Pipe Dreams is a pioneering multidisciplinary project, tackling problems of ageing UK water infrastructure. It makes a major contribution to the improved operation, control and management of existing buried pipe infrastructure, maximising its performance and helping guarantee the quality and safety of drinking water.

WeSenseIt

WeSenseIt is a project developing a citizen-based observatory of water, allowing people and their communities to become active stakeholders in information capturing, evaluation and communication using the power of the internet and modern technology such as UAVs.

SmartWater4Europe

EU Project covering water and wastewater treatment including the recovery of resources; water-energy nexus; decision support systems and monitoring; smart technologies.

Mapping the Underworld

Mapping the Underworld seeks to develop the means to locate, map in 3-D and record, using a single shared multi-sensor platform, the position of all buried utility assets without excavation.

Flood Resilient City

EU-funded project which has enabled responsible public authorities in eight cities in North West Europe to better cope with floods in urban areas.

PREPARED

Enabling Change through the Adaptation Planning Process. Working with a number of urban utilities in Europe and worldwide to develop advanced strategies to meet anticipated challenges in the water supply and sanitation sectors brought about by climate change.

Flagship institutes

The University’s four flagship institutes bring together our key strengths to tackle global issues, turning interdisciplinary and translational research into real-world solutions.
