Our campus today

How did we get here?

The University of Sheffield was founded in 1905 under a Royal Charter which brought together three existing institutions – the Sheffield School of Medicine, Firth College and the Sheffield Technical School.

Much of the early development of the University focused on two sites – Firth Hall and other developments on Western Bank, and St Georges and associated buildings around Mappin Street. Many other buildings have since been added, linking the two original sites together, but they are still divided by Upper Hanover Street, part of the busy inner ring road, and Western Bank, a major route into the city, which meet at the University/Brook Hill roundabout.

Our entire estate, which also includes student villages at Endcliffe and Ranmoor, sporting facilities on Western Bank and Warminster Road, and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with Boeing, supports our population of around 26,000 students and 8,000 staff, accommodated in five-million square feet of buildings.

That population makes a major contribution to the economy of the Sheffield City Region, both through their spending and their longer-term impact on the region's knowledge and skills.

Overview mapOur central campus

Our central campus is located on the west side of the city centre, divided by Upper Hanover Street, a north-south section of the A61 city ring road, as well as two other significant east-west roads, Western Bank and Brook Hill.

The campus is composed of an eclectic mix of buildings, from the red brick university Victorian style, to classic modernism, to contemporary international. We also have a number of listed buildings within our campus, such as the Arts Tower, Firth Court and Western Bank Library. This creates a very interesting and highly visible built environment, but also creates challenges in creating a coherent identity, especially on arrival.

A number of new developments have been recently completed. These include the award-winning Students' Union building, the Pam Liversidge Building (part of the Faculty of Engineering), a new multi-storey car park on Durham Road, and the £81 million Diamond building, our largest ever capital investment in learning and teaching.

In order to maintain our ongoing success as a world-class university and to accommodate increasing numbers of students, we need to grow. Further potential development sites have been identified in both the Hounsfield and Portobello areas.

Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with Boeing

The success of the University is evident in the Sheffield City Region. We initially developed our Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre at Catcliffe in Rotherham over ten years ago.

It has become the world-leading centre for advanced manufacturing, translating research and knowledge developed at the University into practical applications for some of the world’s best known aerospace and other high value manufacturing industries. Since the original building opened in 2004, four further new buildings and two extensions have been added to provide a current total of around 30,000 sq. m of accommodation. As well as securing its own impressive growth, the AMRC has also played a pivotal role in attracting other companies to the area.

Fifty acres of land are now being developed at Sheffield Business Park, just on the other side of the Parkway from the existing AMRC, for further developments in this exciting sector.

Factory 2050 combines a range of technologies, including advanced robotics, flexible automation, unmanned workspace, off-line printing in virtual environments linked to plug-and-play robotics, 3D printing from flexible automated systems, man-machine interfaces, and new programming and training tools. Work is currently underway on developing a campus masterplan for AMRC 2, promoting opportunities for further University research centres and for original equipment manufacturers to co-locate on adjacent land, strengthening the opportunities for collaborative research and manufacturing initiatives.

This Masterplan will be the subject of a separate consultation.
