Showcase of careers support to departments

Built Environment Networking event

AECOM

The Built Environment Networking event was jointly planned and delivered by the Careers Service and the Urban Studies and Planning department; as part of the Careers Service’s ongoing mission to support students’ employability by providing them with opportunities to engage with industry.

The businesses in attendance provided students with advice around getting into the industry, what roles were currently available and how to apply for their vacancies. It also allowed the businesses to raise their profile on campus within relevant academic departments.

“It’s been useful to meet potential candidates for placements/ graduate roles in Lichfields and to raise our company awareness. The informal set-up has made it a relaxed environment to meet students.” - Lucy Bullock, Lichfields

The event was definitely useful for us. This sort of event could also be useful when we are recruiting for our year in industry placement at the end of the year.” - Ross Harding, Javelin Group

The event brought together a range of employers from the Built Environment sector who recruit students from the Urban Studies and Planning, Civil and Structural Engineering and Geography departments. Additionally, students had the opportunity to watch three presentations throughout the day; conducted by Osborne Richardson, CBRE, and University of Sheffield students who discussed global opportunities. These presentations provided insights into trends in the industry, techniques graduates can use in applications and interviews in the sector, and the potential benefits of studying and working abroad.

Supporting the employability of students through industry engagement

Bioeng

“I just never knew we had such a high standard of biomedical/ engineering students with amazing facilities here in Sheffield. They also demonstrated an entrepreneurial flair and willingness to meet business which is refreshing and great to see! The Sheffield region will certainly reap the rewards in the coming years!”
Richard Mills, SleepCogni

The Careers Service worked collaboratively with the Department of Bioengineering to organise and deliver the Bioengineering Showcase. This was part of our ongoing commitment to supporting the employability of students by providing opportunities for them to engage with industry,

The event was designed to support the Department and its students in developing links within the industry by raising the profile of the course provision and research expertise as well as showcasing the fantastic facilities that the University has to offer.

Students had the opportunity to develop their understanding of the industry, the career options open to them and the practical application of their course by meeting directly with some of the UK's leading bioengineering companies in the Health and Medical Technologies field.

Companies including Certara, Granta Design, Kirkstall, Nvidia, ReSolve, Medical AMRC, Steeper, SleepCogni, Cellular Therapeutics, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Colorectal Therapies HTC, HGF Ltd, Medilink and Reckitt Benckiser came to campus to present, demonstrate their products and network with students.

Annette Baxter, Careers Adviser to the department said “It was a fantastic opportunity for students to meet with company representatives to showcase their projects, achievements and see the relevance of their studies to commercial developments within the Health and Medical Technologies sector… We were also able to explore ways to collaborate and work in partnership with industry and were delighted that the event generated potential research partnerships, placements and industry linked projects.”
