We are a virtual research centre comprising long-term collaboration between research groups in 6 science and engineering departments at The University of Sheffield. The research portfolio typically includes leading on multi-institutional research projects with a value exceeding £6 million.
The research is highly multidisciplinary with basic research in the molecular physical and biological sciences of cell interactions with mineral surfaces. Research into engineering application tackles major societal challenges including: managing and reversing soil and land degradation, reducing water pollution, the behaviour of radionuclides in soil and water environments, and producing biofuels.
Major national and international collaboration is established through strategic large grants including a £6M European Commission Large Integrating Project on Soil Management, a recently completed £1.7M NERC large grant on biological weathering of minerals, and participation in a £5M EPSRC programme grant on the physical molecular science of bio-mineral interfaces.
