Past Research Projects

C-MRC holds a rich legacy of academic research.  Detailed below are some past research projects.

Cell Mineral Interface (CMI)

  CMI

This £1.4M programme, primarily funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded programme from 2004 to 2009, with additional support from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and The University of Sheffield included five engineering and science departments at the University and contributed significantly to the Technology Strategy Board Environmental Knowledge Transfer Network.

The aim of the project was to create a step change in understanding the molecular basis for microbial interaction with the natural environment, through world-class multidisciplinary scientific research, strong international collaboration and close consultation with industry.

Weathering of Soil (WSC)

 WSC_2

This research project, funded by Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) 2006 to 2013, tackled the challenge of quantifying the role of biology in the physical and chemical alternation of rocks and minerals to form and develop soil at Earth’s surface and to supply plants with mineral nutrients.

The aim of the project was to transform our understanding of how biota control mineral weathering and soil formation; through new mechanistic understanding and how this affects weathering processes from the scale of individual mineral grains to the whole planet.
