Interfacial process

Processes at the interface are dominated by interactions between molecules from soft organic compounds and hard inorganic or mineral surfaces. The processes are often thermodynamically controlled and may be supported by weak chemical reactions. These processes are affected by the bulk phase composition and the nano-environment in which they occur.
At the heart of the C-MRC is the biological interfaces with minerals research area. Cell attachment and adhesion are key mechanisms for cell colonisation and biofilm formation. We look at these processes in partnership with Animal and Plant Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and Materials Engineering at Sheffield and elsewhere. The applications of this research extend from single cell-mineral attachment to biofilm formation in the water industry and medical devices.
