Reverend Jeremy Clines: University Co-ordinating Chaplain

Email: j.clines@sheffield.ac.uk
Phone: +44 114 222 4098

Jeremy is Sheffield-born - though in voluntary exile from 1991 until 2010 - and of colonial-Australian and Arab-Jewish descent.

Jeremy particularly enjoys working with people of all ages, backgrounds, identities and perspectives whatever their religion or belief or if they have no religion or belief.

He thinks there is great value in letting people tell their story, so as to allow meaning to surface even where there may only seem, on first glance, to be futility.

He is available to meet with students, staff and alumni: you can book, via email, to see him or simply come during his open-access hours 12h-13h and 1330h-14h on Mondays and Fridays during semester time.

Having served as Anglican Chaplain from 2010 to 2019, Jeremy is now the coordinating chaplain and is an ordained priest.

Jeremy has a varied academic profile. He is a member of SIIBS and is involved in the following topic and project areas in relation to religion, Church and worship:

  • ecotheology, eco-liturgy, environmentalism and faith
  • Leadership, Religion and Society and Faiths in HE Chaplaincy
  • liberating theologies of all shapes and sizes
  • storying, LGBT+ identities and the Church
  • Christian relationships with Belief, No Belief, Religious Movements and World Religions
  • spiritual accompaniment, spiritual story-telling and Godly Play
  • spiritual development and spiritual wellbeing

His presentations, papers and professional practice have an emphasis in HE Chaplaincy.

Jeremy is also a director of Sheffield Phoenix Press and Eco Family Travel and a trustee of the Sir Henry Stephenson Endowment Trust and assists the Anglican Chaplaincy Trust (University of Sheffield).

Jeremy has written some new Collects and Post Communion prayers for the liturgical year.

Jeremy tweets too: Jeremy Clines (@latequartet) on Twitter.

His personal interests include: friends and family; bread-making; cycling; peace, justice and environmentalism; playing the double bass and rowing. He is married to Louise and they have two young children.

Reverend Sabine Tenge-Heslop

Email: bnbr-life@sheffield.ac.uk

Hello from Sabine!  I have been living in the UK for over 12 years, teaching German at Durham University, from which I have now retired.  Last year, I joined the team at the BNBR-Life Centre at The University of Sheffield, and I really enjoy the encounters with a diverse student & staff body here.  There is so much to learn from each other!

I am an Anglican priest, and I work, mainly remotely, as a volunteer.  It is great to work with such a dedicated and inspirational team, and to engage in such a variety of things, e.g. worship, pastoral care, craft activities, walks, campus vigils, and much, much more.

In my free time, I like walking, bird watching, and gardening – it is very satisfying to eat your own organic food from the garden.  I love travelling, especially to my home country Germany, to visit my two grown-up children.

I am very happy to meet online for a chat with students and staff: You will always find a non-judgemental, compassionate ear!

I am a lay minister in the Anglican church with a deep interest in helping people to know Gods love for themselves and for others.

I am interested in disability theology, and enjoy anything that puts the Bible in context and helps it make sense.

Deacon Jackie Wright

Email: jackie.wright@sheffield.ac.uk

Hello to you all. I’m Jackie Wright, I am an ordained Deacon in the Methodist Church.

My background is in Special Education in Birmingham, where I was predominantly working with children on the Autistic Spectrum for 20 years until I felt called into ministry.

I have been living here in Sheffield for just a year now, having been in the Lindisfarne Methodist Circuit in Northumberland for the previous five years.  My ministry here in Sheffield is based at Victoria Hall City Centre Methodist Church and also working out in the wider community with those who feel they are on the margins of church or
society, with the other City Centre Churches and groups.

I have recently taken on a role with Sheffield Street Pastors once a month. I hadn’t realised just how many people are still out and partying at 3am in the morning…Must be getting old!

I look forward to meeting you at various events and if you ever need a chat.

Jean Russell: United Reformed Church Adviser

Email: j.russell@sheffield.ac.uk
Phone: +44 114 222 3098

Hello, I am Jean Russell, the URC Religious Advisor and an Elder at St Andrew’s URC Sheffield.

During the week I work in CICS (Corporate Information and Computing Services) providing research support to researchers who are using statistical or qualitative data analysis packages in the University.

On evenings and weekends I am in the final stages of finishing a PhD on the ways URC congregations sustain their identities at the University of Birmingham.

I arrived in Sheffield twenty years ago and have now stayed here twice as long as I have stayed anywhere else.

The URC is a denomination created by the merger of different strands of the Reformed tradition. As such we are a mix between Churches of Christ, Presbyterianism and Congregationalism. What that means is worked out in each local context. However to an outsider we are distinguishable by our tendency to paint things blue, go on walks and sell orange marmalade!

If you would like to know more, I am happy to chat or put you in contact with a local congregation (not just my own).

Email: bnbr-life@sheffield.ac.uk
Phone: +44 746 753 1322

Unitarians are spiritual seekers, diverse in opinion, who form a loving community around the common search for truth.

I am the Minister of Upper Chapel (on Norfolk Street near the Crucible) and am happy to support students across a broad range of non-dogmatic faith perspectives including, but not limited to, liberal Christianity and religious humanism.

In my previous career (pre-2017) I was an academic with a STEM subject background and so am familiar with many aspects of present day Higher Education. I am also currently transitioning gender (she/they) and am happy to talk with LGBTQ+ individuals at the intersection of faith and gender/sexuality.
