Description

The University's Chaplaincy Centre are offering a day trip to Lincoln Cathedral - a large and beautiful Christian church in the historic city of Lincoln - on Friday 13th May. The trip will be led by Sabine Tenge-Heslop and Rob Barnett from the Chaplaincy team.

Lincoln Cathedral is nearly one thousand years old and dominates the skyline of Lincoln, which also boasts a nearby castle that there will be time to visit.

We will take a guided tour of the cathedral, followed by the opportunity to take a tour of the cathedral's roof with lovely views over Lincoln.

The trip is open to students of our university whatever their identity, belief or no belief. It is a special opportunity as the £5 sign-up cost (which includes entry to the cathedral, the guided tour and optional roof tour) is heavily subsidised. Normally this would cost £14.25.

We will travel from Sheffield to Lincoln by train in the morning, and take a guided tour of the cathedral from 11:45-12:45. Then there will be time for lunch, followed by the roof tour for those who have chosen to do this.

During the afternoon there will be free time to explore the city, including its interesting shops and the castle. You can choose to take a train back to Sheffield with Sabine and Rob, or to catch a train that suits you.

ON THE DAY

We will meet at Sheffield Train Station at 09:15, outside the main entrance by the distinctive steel statue of a salmon fish. If the weather is very wet, we will meet inside the station under the main digital display screens.

We will catch the 09:37 train, which reaches Lincoln at 10:59. We'll then take the 20-minute walk from the train station to the cathedral for the guided tour from 11:45-12:45.

You can bring a packed lunch with you or buy lunch near to the cathedral, maybe in a café. You cannot eat and drink inside the cathedral but there are outdoor areas nearby where you can eat and drink.

One way to explore the city is by free digital trails on your mobile phone. You can do this alone or in a group. The trails are listed here: visitlincoln.com/trails. One of the trails is about the two-thousand-year-old Roman history of Lincoln.

You can return to Sheffield by any of the regular trains. Sabine and Rob will meet back at Lincoln Train Station at 17:00 to get the 17:23 train. This is due to reach Sheffield at 18:45.

There are a limited number of places, so please confirm your place as soon as possible by completing this form and visiting the Chaplaincy Centre Reception to pay your £5 tour fee IN CASH ONLY on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between 09:30 and 14:30. The Chaplaincy Centre is located in the Octagon Centre (postcode S10 2TQ) next to the Students' Union.

We ask that you buy your own train tickets. You can do this on the day or in advance. A flexible return ticket from Sheffield to Lincoln is £16.40 or £12 with a railcard. There may be options to buy cheaper single tickets.

If the cost of the trip is difficult for you, please email chaplaincy@sheffield.ac.uk and we will do our best to discreetly help you.
