Degree: MChem Chemistry with Study in Industry
Graduate role: Applications Scientist, Croda
"I currently work as an Applications Scientist in the Lubricants department at Croda, a speciality chemical company, where I am responsible for testing lubricant additives as part of customer work requests and new product development.
"I like that my role allows me to have involvement with the full research and development chain, from contact with customers and involvement in the initial synthesis of new products through to the scale up products on the manufacturing plant.
"I chose to work in the lab for a chemical company after I worked in the analytical team at AstraZeneca, a pharmaceutical company during my industrial placement year while at university.
"My chemistry degree gave me the knowledge and skills I needed to work in a chemical lab. As well as studying for my degree I was also involved in university sports teams and had part time jobs. By being involved in these different things it allowed me to develop crucial time management skills that have helped me when leading multiple projects in my job.
"I chose to study at Sheffield as the university had a great reputation for both academic success and providing a great student experience outside of lectures. I also fell in love with the city the first time I visited. It had everything I needed without being too big and was perfectly located for spending sunny days in the Peak District."
