Degree: MChem Chemistry with a Year in Industry
Graduate role: Applications Technologist, Addivant
Matthew did a year in industry at the multinational chemical company Scott Bader, before landing a graduate chemical industry job at Addivant.
"As an applications technologist, my role involves formulating solutions to customer issues and performing testing of compounded polymers. My job appeals to my analytical mindset as it requires problem solving and analysing large data sets to determine which direction projects should focus.
"During my time studying chemistry at Sheffield, I was exposed to a variety of research fields and felt an affinity to polymers due to their relevance to everyday life. My industrial year sparked my interest in research and the final year modules offered provided fascinating and current information on this subject.
"The first two years in the undergraduate labs at Sheffield provided a good basis for me to develop my lab skills and gain confidence of wet chemistry techniques. Additionally, my Masters year in the Harrity group equipped me with the skills to manage my time effectively whilst given me some practise at managing my own projects.
"Sheffield is a fantastic city with a vibrant atmosphere. The accommodation for first year students is outstanding and eases the transition of moving away from home. The nightlife is vibrant with West Street as the hub of the city come Friday (or any weekday) night. As an avid sportsperson, the wide variety of societies on offer was great. Memberships are very affordable too!
"Overall, Sheffield offered everything I could want from a university. Opportunities to develop my interests whether academically or socially and meet a variety of interesting people you won’t find at many other places."
