Song Hee Yeo came from South Korea to do her undergraduate degree in our department, before progressing on to our MSc(Res) Chemistry course. She's now doing a PhD with Professor Iain Coldham.

As an international student, I couldn't visit the University campus and the city during the open days before deciding where to study. All I could do was to search for pictures on Google and read students' stories and feedback. The more I looked at the pictures, the more I was assured that Sheffield was where I would like to study.

Just as the pictures show, the city and campus are amazingly friendly, supportive and welcoming. The city has the right balance between the vibrant city centre and calming nature.

During my undergraduate degree, I enjoyed the lectures and the laboratory sessions, especially when it was related to organic chemistry. I also really appreciated the support given by academics through the tutorials and workshops.

Knowing that there is no better place to study than Sheffield, I decided to stay on for the MSc(Res) course, which was fewer lectures and more research than the MSc course. My research project involved the synthesis of the novel substituted nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds.

The MSc(Res) course helped me to realise I definitely wanted to do a PhD in organic chemistry. The masters course gave me the experience of how it would be as a PhD student, as I worked in the lab along with other PhD students and postdoctoral researchers for one year.
