Support for Gaming at the University of Sheffield
Online gaming is allowed in residences at the University of Sheffield and we don't block any games. However, individual user support is limited.
We will help you get connected and we will help at our discretion you if you experience difficulties with a particular game. The process is as follows:
- If you experience problems with a game, see our help & support web pages to find out how to get in touch with us.
- We will investigate problems wherever we can, but this isn't always possible as we don't have access to all types of games and consoles.
- However, if many students experience the same problem with a widely-used game we will do our best to resolve it.
- If we are able to find a workable solution which doesn't compromise our internet security we will implement it wherever possible.
The only significant block we implement on the University network is against peer to peer file sharing. The most common causes of game failure is that the game requires a port associated with file sharing or it behaves in a similar way to peer to peer file sharing software. We can usually find a way to allow the game to run without inadvertently allowing other software to be used for file sharing.
